The Typing Speed Test measures how fast and accurately you type by timing you as you copy a passage, then reporting your speed in words per minute (WPM) and your accuracy percentage. It's a quick way to benchmark and improve your keyboard skills.
The standard measure treats every 5 characters as one "word." Gross WPM is (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. Net WPM subtracts errors: net WPM = gross WPM − (uncorrected errors ÷ minutes). Accuracy is correct characters ÷ total typed × 100. Average adult typists reach 40 WPM; skilled typists exceed 70 WPM.
Example 1 — One minute. Typing 250 characters in 60 seconds with no errors: (250 ÷ 5) ÷ 1 = 50 WPM.
Example 2 — With errors. Typing 300 characters in 60 seconds with 5 mistakes: gross = 60 WPM, net = 60 − 5 = 55 WPM at about 98% accuracy.
